PMEGP at a glance

The Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) is a credit-linked subsidy scheme of the Government of India to help set up new micro-enterprises in rural and urban areas. Implementing agencies typically include KVIC, state KVIB, and DICs, with financing through banks.

Objectives

• Generate employment through new self-employment ventures / micro enterprises
• Support traditional artisans and unemployed youth at their place of residence where possible
• Help reduce distress migration by creating local livelihoods
• Raise wage-earning capacity of artisans and micro-entrepreneurs

Common eligibility notes (new units)

• Any individual above 18 years of age
• No income ceiling for assistance under PMEGP
• For higher project costs (commonly above ₹10 lakh manufacturing / ₹5 lakh business-service), minimum educational qualification (Class VIII pass) may apply — confirm current guidelines
• Only new projects sanctioned specifically under PMEGP
• Existing units that already availed government subsidy under other schemes are generally not eligible
• Projects without capital expenditure are not eligible
• Cost of land is not included in project cost
• Udyam registration is mandatory for new PMEGP units
• Only one person from one family is eligible
